Language Classes

The University of Pittsburgh offers Ukrainain language courses at all levels from beginner to advanced, taught by a native speaker of Ukrainain.

Each fall, the Slavic Department welcomes beginners with no previous knowlege of Ukrainian to take our 3-credit course ELEMENTARY UKRAINIAN 1, and the sequence continues in the spring semester with ELEMENTARY UKRAINIAN 2.  Students at and above the INTERMEDIATE UKRAINIAN 1 level also have the opportunity to take 1-credit mini courses designed to improve students' ability to read and discuss texts in Ukrainian, such as UKRAINIAN CULTURE and CHORNOBYL IN UKRAINIAN CULTURAL MEMORY.

INTENSIVE BEGINNING UKRAINIAN (6 credits) is offered in the summer by the Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI).  These intensive classes condense a regular schoolyear of language learning into a few summer weeks, and meet five days per week.

Scholarships

Students taking Ukrainian may be eligible to apply for the Kateryna Dowbenko Ukrainian Language Scholarship to offset the cost of language study. Kateryna Dowbenko was a dedicated Ukrainian Instructor at the University of Pittsburgh for over 35 years. She was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in 1924, and survived the Holodomor and Soviet repression.  She was knowledgeable and passionate about sharing Ukrainian culture, traditions, and literature with the Pitt community.  This funding is made possible through an endowment established in support of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, which draws on private and corporate donations.  Interested students can apply for scholarships on PittFund$Me.

The Summer Language Institute also offers generous scholarships for intensive summer study.

Community

Pitt has a Ukrainian Culture Club that hosts events, activities, and fundraisers to celebrate and support the Ukrainian community.

The Spring Festival of the Egg is held each year by the Nationality Rooms in celebration of the traditional art of pysanky, also called Ukrainian Easter eggs.
