6-week session in Pittsburgh, June 9-July 18, 2014

The 2014 Russian and East European Summer Language Institute will offer the Central and East European language courses listed below. Each level grants 6 credits (and four additional credits for continued study in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Montenegro, or Slovakia) and is equivalent to one year of college-level language study. Intermediate and Advanced Polish and Czech are six-credit courses abroad.

Classes

Classes in Pittsburgh meet from 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. daily Monday through Friday for six weeks. Students will also have weekly films and singing classes, occasional cultural lectures, and will participate in a cooking class. In addition there are (very popular) weekly picnics on the lawn where a different nationality/language group is featured. All SLI students and instructors attend.

Description of Courses

East European Languages (non-Russian)

Beginning Intensive Courses
Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Slovak, Turkish, Ukrainian 6 credits
A thorough introductory language course. Emphasis is placed on communicative competence – active use of new structures in reading, dialogues, free conversation, and listening comprehension.
Beginning Intensive Polish (Study in Poland Option) 6+4
(6 weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Poland)
6 or 10 credits
The class begins with the class in Pittsburgh, and continues with the same textbook (First Year Polish) in Poland, covering two more lessons than the group in Pittsburgh. In Poland the course changes from 5 hours to 3 hours per day devoted to the primary textbook, with 2 hours per day being based on materials supplementary to the textbook on practical topics especially relevant to the stay in Poland (travel, shopping, cooking, social customs, restaurant eating, time and dates, etc.) Instructors in Krakow are trained at the Jagiellonian University. Meetings with Polish students and excursions both around Krakow and Warsaw are incorporated into the program.
Beginning Intensive Slovak (Study in Slovakia Option) 6+4
(6 weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Slovakia)

The class begins with instruction in Pittsburgh and continues with study

in Bratislava, Slovakia at the Intermediate level. In this course, students

will be able to complete the equivalent of three semesters of Slovak

language study. The program includes intensive language instruction,

day trips in and around Bratislava, Tatra Mountains, Kosice among others,

with optional trips to Budapest and Vienna. More information about abroad program here.

Beginning Intensive Bulgarian (Study in Bulgaria) 6+4
(6 weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Bulgaria)
6 or 10 credits

The class begins with instruction in Pittsburgh and continues with instruction in Bulgaria at New Bulgarian University in Sofia. In this course, students will be able to complete the equivalent of three semesters of Bulgarian language study. Excursions within Bulgaria are incorporated into the program.

 
Beginning Intensive Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (Study in Montenegro Option) 6+4
(6 weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Montenegro)
6 or 10 credits

The class begins with instruction in Pittsburgh and continues with instruction in Montenegro. In this course, students will be able to complete the equivalent of three semesters of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language study. Excursions within Montenegro are incorporated into the program.

Beginning Intensive Hungarian (Study in Hungary Option) 6+4

The class begins with instruction in Pittsburgh and continues with instruction in Debrecen, Hungary. In this course, students will be able to complete the equivalent of three semesters of Hungarian language study. Excursions within Hungary are incorporated into the program.

Beginning Intensive Czech (Study in Prague Option) 6+4

(Six weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Prague)

The class begins with instruction in Pittsburgh and continues with instruction in Prague, Czech Republic. In this course, students will be able to complete the equivalent of three semesters of Czech language study. Excursions and cultural programs are incorporated into the program in the Czech Republic
Intermediate Intensive Courses  

Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Slovak (In Pittsburgh)

6 credits
Assuming familiarity on the part of the student with the basics of grammar, the intermediate course is oriented more around practical topics of special relevance to prospective travelers to the target country (travel, social events, shopping, dining, entertainment, popular culture, history, and so on). Special attention is devoted to developing a good socio-linguistic consciousness, so as to smoothly function in the target culture. At the same time, the intermediate courses provide a systematic review of the grammar, to which are added elements more characteristic of the written language (complex sentences, the subjunctive mood, participles and gerunds).

Intermediate Intensive Polish (Study in Poland Option) 6+4
(6 weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Poland)
6 or 10 credits
The class begins with the class in Pittsburgh, and finishes the textbook (Intermediate Polish) in Poland, covering two more lessons than the group in Pittsburgh. The course in Poland then continues with the Intermediate Polish Reader, supplemented by materials prepared by instructors in Krakow. Meetings with Polish students and excursions both around Krakow and Warsaw are incorporated into the program.

Intermediate Intensive Polish (Study in Krakow, Poland) 4 credits
Students may join the second part of the course, in Krakow, for four credits if they can demonstrate, by telephone interview, a mastery of Polish commensurate with one year university study.

 
Intermediate Intensive Bulgarian (Study in Bulgaria) 4 credits

Students who have completed the equivalent of one year of Bulgarian language study can continue their study of Bulgarian in an SLI program operated at New Bulgarian University in Sofia. Excursions within Bulgaria are incorporated into the Intermediate program.

 

Intermediate Intensive Czech (Study in Prague)  

Intermediate Intensive Polish (Abroad only) Study in Krakow

6 credits
Students who have completed the equivalent of one year of Czech or Polish language study may continue their study  in an SLI program operated in Pragueor Krakow.  Excursions are incorporated into the Intermediate program.  These are FLAS-eligible programs
 
Intermediate Intensive Slovak (Study in Slovakia) 4 credits
Students who have completed the equivalent of one year of Slovak language study can continue their study of Slovak in an SLI program operated in Bratislava. See description above for Beginning Intensive Slovak.

 
Advanced Intensive Courses

Advanced Intensive Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and Slovak 

(in Pittsburgh)

6 credits
Assuming a basic mastery of vocabulary and grammatical structures, the advanced course aims to improve communicative competence in areas of practical and public concern (history, politics, popular culture), particularly from a comparative perspective. The course is often topically oriented, with instructional blocks devoted to such topics as social customs, the educational system, employment and vacations, the health and welfare systems, sources of social tension, and so on.

 
Advanced Intensive B/C/S (+Study in Montenegro Option) 6+4
(6 weeks in Pittsburgh, 4 weeks in Montenegro)
10 credits

The class begins with the six-week course in Pittsburgh, and finishes with four

weeks of study in Montenegro. The program includes intensive language

instruction, day trips and cultural programming in Montenegro.

Advanced Intensive Serbian in Montenegro (abroad only)

4 credits

This is a four-week long intensive language course at the advanced level

with cultural programming and excursions in Montenegro. An oral interview

will be required for placement and participation.

Advanced Intensive Czech and Polish (abroad only)

(FLAS Fellowship eligible)

6 credits

This is a six-week long intensive language course with 150 language contact

hours with cultural programming and excursions in Prague, Czech Republic or

Krakow, Poland.

Advanced Mastery BCS

For Advanced (Professional Competence) Heritage Speakers of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (Study in Zagreb, Sarajevo, Belgrade)
