Ukrainian Endowment

Ukrainian at the University of Pittsburgh

The Ukrainian language has been taught continuously at the University of Pittsburgh for over 40 years.  Due to  necessary fiscal contstraints, only courses with 14 or more students enolled are funded.  As is common with most less-commonly-taught languages, the enrollments for beginning, intermediate and advanced Ukrainian language are below that number.  As a strong Slavic Department attached to one of only fifteen Centers for Russian and East European Studies in the US, we are committed to do whatever we can to keep Ukrainian among the languages we offer in our Department.

Support from the Local Ukrainian Community for a National Ukrainian Endowment Campaign

The Ukrainian community in Pittsburgh has pledged its support of efforts to increase the Ukrainian Endowment to a level that will allow for the costs of Ukrainian language instructional costs to be covered by the interest earned by the Endowment, so that future instruction of Ukrainian is guaranteed.  Ridna Shkola has taken up the cause to help lead a national effort to raise funds for the Endowment, with Dr. Roman G. Kyshakevych chairing.

Giving to the Ukrainian Endowment at the University of Pittsburgh

The principal of the Ukrainian Endowment increased considerably in the last fiscal year, to over $140,000 as of June 30th, 2019, but we have further to go in order to achieve our goal of guaranteeing instruction of Ukrainian at Pitt regardless of the size of the class. We can accept gifts in any amount and by any method.  Corporate matching funds can be utilized, and gifts are fully tax deductible.
