Nancy Condee Gives Talk at University of Cambridge

Nancy Condee gave a talk at University of Cambridge (Pembroke College) in the Slavonic Studies Section: New Work in Slavonic Studies). The talk was entitled “What is Russian Modernity? Beyond Orientalism, Huntington, and Other Sins” (1 February 2024).  Prof. Condee was later a guest of University of Cambridge (Trinity College), where she was the keynote-interlocutor (25 April 2024) on the work of Prof. Simon Franklin (Cambridge Professor of Slavonic Studies, University of Cambridge, recipient of the 2007 Lomonosov Gold Medal by the Russian Academy of Sciences) on the basis of his most recent book, The Russian Graphosphere, 1450–1850 (Cambridge, 2019). She was also one of fifteen international in-person participants in an all-day symposium (in honor of Prof. Franklin) at University of Cambridge (Clare College) on 26 April 2024. Prof. Condee was invited to participate in a two-person book-analysis of Thomas Seifrid’s Staging the Absolute: Ritual in Russia’s Modern Era (University of Toronto Press, 2023), organized by University of Southern California (Levan Institute for the Humanities) together with Galin Tihanov (Queen Mary University, London), moderated by Colleen McQuillen (USC) on 6 May 2024.

Prof. Condee has been appointed to the inaugural Advisory Committee for the Flying University for Ukrainian Students (FUUS) for 2024-2025.  Founded by Andrzej W. Tymowski (former Director of International Programs, American Council of Learned Societies), FUUS is modeled on Poland’s underground courses taught during foreign occupation.  In today’s Ukraine, classes continue despite blackouts and sirens to provide ongoing academic support for students dislocated by war.  Prof. Condee taught a January 2024 FUUS seminar (Modernities) on which more information is available here. FUUS is currently funded by the Kosciuszko Foundation of New York.  For more information, see “Humanities in a War Zone.” Prof. Condee’s recent publications include the interview conducted by PEN Russia President Nadezhda Azhgikhina (“Встреча стала уроком феминистской педагогики (беседа с Нэнси Конди)” [“The Meeting Became a Lesson in Feminist Pedagogy (Conversation with Nancy Condee)”] in the volume Гласность в двух культурах: говорят участницы первой встречи писательниц России и Америки в Нью-Йорке [Glasnost' in Two Cultures: First Meeting of Women Writers from Russia and America in New York] (Moscow: Iurii Shchekochikin Foundation, 2023), 44-53.
